Bird 99

August 4, 2014

Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you (drumroll please) . . . the Golden Eagle. It would have been nice if it had been bird 100, but that’s the way it goes. As it turned out Bird 100 was a rock dove which wasn’t quite so thrilling, apart from the hundredness. They were pretty good views of the eagle though, being very red in tooth and claw and lunching upon rabbit. Bird 97 was pretty cool too – the White Tailed Sea Eagle (the intervening 98 was a wheatear, if you’re interested) although sadly it wasn’t up for majestic soaring and was instead huddling with a friend on a hill top overlooking the car park in Portree. (I may have forgotten to mention that bonny Moomin had sped over the sea to Skye.) We would never have managed to spot these without expert assistance who knew where to go and what to look for, and who furnished the sort of telescopic aid without which we might just as well have been looking at sparrows.
All of this hunting down nature took time, sowhile we were driving along Boy Wonder proposed a round of Birdwatcher’s Songbook (that boy listens to too much I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue). We were particularly pleased with Elton Swan, Guns and Crowses and Swan Direction, Taylor Swift was just too easy! Any offers?
