from the top – Thing One

January 16, 2014

20140116-184909.jpgHaving the three little girls’ hats before Christmas my next task was a hat for Boy Wonder. I decided to use the same basic plan, but this hat needed to be bigger. I’d worked out that I had a gauge of 26 stitches to 10 cm, with the double knit that I was using, and on 3.5 mm needles, so this time I cast on 144 stitches – it needed to be a multiple of 16 as I used two motifs from Arne and Carlos’ Christmas Balls book – a reindeer and a snowflake.

The striped vertical ribbing at the bottom is a little less elastic than ordinary ribbing, and I think maybe I should have had a few less stitches there and then increased for the patterning, but I do like the look of it, and it think it helps to tie together the 3 yarns I have used (2 James Brett pure merino and a sauberball). It also has the advantage of providing a cosy double layer. Maybe it should have been a little deeper. Boy likes the hat though, and that’s the main thing. Next – gloves!
