It’s been a bit of a stressful time here at Pict Towers. Boy Wonder has been waiting for news from his first choice of university. He is very calm and stoic, although I know it means a great deal to him, and it’s hard, isn’t it, to watch an anxious child and know that there is nothing that we can do about it?

Although the Pictlets are now both well into teenagerdom, we do still have bedtime stories (although the reading of them tends to be a bit fitful now that they are also so busy with other things) and I sometimes wonder if we still do this more for my sake than for theirs. So it was lovely yesterday when Boy Wonder suggested that perhaps we could read a bit before bedtime. It’s Arthur Ransome’s Winter Holiday, for the record, pleasant, escapist stuff.

We all three settled down under the quilt with the book and hot water bottles, and had an old-fashioned, comforting evening. Reassurance for all.
