get ready to crumble . . .

September 11, 2013

On Saturday, the Pictlets and I went blackberrying just up the lanes behind our house. Some patches were a bit sparse, but we managed to get a pretty good collection (shamefully the biggest and juiciest came from the unweeded margins of the garden), and so begins the stewing season. The über pudding for the end of summer is blackberry and apple crumble. It’s so very easy to top the stewed fruit with the crumble mix (half as much butter as flour, and about as much sugar as butter) and pop it in the oven for half an hour or so. The sum of the whole is very much greater than its parts, and you can add all sorts of possible extras to the topping, but this time we just had some extra rolled oats.

Even Boy Wonder, who is not a huge fan of crumble welcomes its return as it means that there is custard. Every cloud and all that!
