walking “with” Boy Wonder up on Saddleworth Moor

March doesn’t seem to have a great deal to recommend it at the moment. We had a bright start at the weekend, and a lovely walk up on the moor to Sykes Pillar with the Pictlets on Saturday,  but it’s subsiding into fog and wetness now. I must apologise to everyone who lives around here, and explain that it is all my fault because there is stuff I need to do in the garden and that is why it is now so unpleasant.

Anyway, one plus about the time of year is that it is just the right amount of lightness for the birds to be bustling around and topping themselves up after a long cold night, at the same time that I am in the kitchen sorting out breakfasts and packed lunches and looking out of the window for inspiration.

Today we had two beautiful long-tailed tits out on the peanuts, I think they are possibly my favourites among the garden birds, and this was the first time this year that I had seen more than one lonely little bird. Even more exciting, yesterday there was a nuthatch out there – a first for our garden. The pleasure of watching them well repays the investment in birdseed.
