Shop Local

March 20, 2011

Living in a semi-rural setting, we are fortunate to have a great selection of shops locally, although many of us were concerned when Tesco got permisson to build in Greenfield. I try to only do the shopping there that I would otherwise do at Sainsbury in Oldham or Ashton, and not take custom away from the Co-op in the village, but today’s local shopping was of an entirely different variety. The local WI had organised a special day at the Civic Hall, with local businesses taking stalls to promote the idea of shopping locally. Some were shops from the village, some were people like caterers and therapists who are based here in Saddleworth but you aren’t necessarily aware of their existence. One or two came complete surprises – purveyors of cupcakes and chunky scarves, who were taking their first steps into the marketplace. Some lovely things, but I was pretty restrained and just came away with a card for Mothers’ Day, a cupcake (well technically I didn’t come away with that as Super Girl and I shared it there) and some delicious chocolate dipped crystallised orange, which has just been an elegant edition to today’s chocolate orange Sunday Sundae. Don’t know how local the oranges were though!

It all sounds so lovely, week one with your local Baking Challenge and week two at the Shop Local event. Saddleworth will cetainly be coming into its own for the next five or six months and making me all the more home sick! I miss the fabulous community events, winter’s over guys, buff up your Crocs, spring and summer are around the corner and outdoor events are on the calender!
