the family that weeds together . . .

May 16, 2010

We’ve had a busy weekend in the garden, our blueberries were planted out on Saturday, and with prices the way they are we will just need to get two punnets-worth from each bush and they will have paid for themselves. They’re looking a bit weedy at the moment, but our investment should be pretty safe! The strawberries aren’t looking quite such a good bet – I’d got them in a basket-type thing, to keep them out of the way of the slugs, but the birds have taken a liking to the basket liner and are stealing bits as nesting material, which is a bit of a shame.

Today, we were endeavouring to clear what was once the vegetable patch – the plan is to turn it into an area with raised beds that will be both prettier and easier to manage than it was. So far we have cleared a huge number of brambles, and disturbed a range of frogs and toads of varying sizes.  The husband isn’t so wild about the whole weeding lark, but supervised Super Girl in the production of a trial raised bed, which went pretty well – nowhere to put it yet though – considerably more clearing and digging to be done first. Guess where I’ll be if it doesn’t rain tomorrow!
